Until Next Time....

I'll end this Lake Powell photo tour with another of my favorites.  This is more like real photography, where most of the other photos have been family snapshots.  This morning the clouds were beautiful, with sun rays peeking through and turning the water gold.  A perfect shot to enhance with a bit of HDR.  I have to add something about Lake Powell skies.  At night when it is clear, as it most always is, we lay on our backs on the top deck and watch the best show ever.  The sky is very, very dark (no city lights for miles), and so you can see millions upon millions of stars and constellations.  The milky way is amazing, the north star brilliant, the big and little dipper are easily spotted.  And almost every night you can see one or more shooting stars.  Now that is relaxing!!!  

Taking a Stroll

Sometimes in the afternoon we'll stroll along the shore, visit with our neighbors, build sand castles or play games in the sand.

Yum!

If we are not in the water, or relaxing with a good book, or playing games, then most likely we are eating!  All junk food is acceptable and encouraged at Lake Powell.  One week of junk food can't hurt, can it???? (This is Tyler's Emily.  They had just started dating.)

History Revealed

There are many ruins of ancient people in these red cliffs.  Part of this 'home' is original, and part has been restored.  I can't remember for sure, but I believe these ruins belonged to the Anasazi who lived in this area.

I guess this photo is 'X' rated.  I hope no one is offended.   Ancient pictographs (painted), and petroglyphs  (carved) are common throughout southern Utah's red rock country.  These appear next to the dwelling in the above photo.

Seeing the Sights

This is one of my favorite photos from last year.  One day we usually hop in the ski boat and go touring.  There are thousands of little inlets, channels, etc.  This inlet is not much wider than you see here.  It is often a bit scary to be surrounded on all sides by huge red rock cliffs.  Sometimes the rock takes on a bowl shape overhead.  The amazing formations of arches and holes and shapes are endless.  The kayakers on the left show how huge the rock formation is.

Sunset Sunday

This is a panorama, so the blog format does not do this scene justice.  The sunrises and sunsets are so stunning at Lake Powell.  The rocks, already red, take on the most gorgeous colors at sunset and the water turns magenta.   This is a hand held panorama from the back of the houseboat.

Water sports 'rule' at Lake Powell.  In the summer the water is warmer than bath water, and most of the day is spent in the water, whether, skiing, swimming, floating on a tube or jumping off the top of the houseboat!

Time to Relax!!!

Yesterday we said goodbye to the last of our house guests and today we leave for Lake Powell for a week of rest and recuperation.  I'm taking my camera, my bathing suit, and 10 good books.  That's about it!  I might take a few photos, but the majority of time will be spent in a nice deck chair with a cool drink in one hand and a book in the other.  The rest of the gang will probably be water skiing, tubing, etc., but that all seems like too much work for me!  I'll have a post each day, with fun memories of last year's trip so you can see some of our fun times!

 

Here is the houseboat with Tyler, Emily and some of their crazy friends.  I think I posted a photo of this before.  If so, sorry for the repeat.  There are 4 bedrooms (well, cubby holes), two bathrooms, kitchen and living area.  All the comforts of home, including air conditioning!   

Fantasy Wedding

Tyler and Emily hired photographers to take lovely traditional photos documenting the big event; however, Emily wanted me to do some 'high fashion' and 'fantasy' type shots just for fun.  This was taken before the wedding in the meadow next to my home.  The wedding day was perfect in every way.  I was especially impressed with the photographers they chose - a husband and wife team.  She shot stills and he shot video.  The ceremony was from 3:00p to about 4:30p.  Right after, the photographers took pictures out and around the temple until about 10 minutes before the reception/dinner/dancing that started at 6:00p.  As part of the 'entertainment',  they set up a large screen and played a beautiful video that the videographer had just taken 15 minutes earlier.   I was amazed he could put this together on the spot and that fast.  He said it was a short sneak peak at what the final one will be.  If you want a little romance today,  HERE you go!  (P.S.  I don't know if it is because it is HD or what, but you have to start the video,  then pause it, and let it 'render' or 'load' or do whatever it does for a few minutes.  Then hit the start arrow again, and it should play without stopping.)

Finally, I was able to sleep in a little bit, then go outside and enjoy an early morning stroll through my garden.  It felt wonderful to relax a bit and know that I didn't have to rush off to another major commitment.  The next few photos will be about discovering what has been growing while I've been away.  (I love the bokeh background in this image.)
P.S.  The wedding was beautiful, and the reception was so fun and very entertaining.  It was a mix of very elegant surroundings, prime rib dinner for 180, and the most fun, watching Tyler and Emily show us their 'first dance' which was beautiful.  They met while country dancing, and they dazzled us with a combination of slow and swing, twirls and dips.  I couldn't believe my son was doing this, let alone in front of all those people!  (Another best part was that I wasn't the photographer!!!  I just concentrated on enjoying every minute and letting someone else worry about documenting every moment!)

SUNSET AT LAKE ARROWHEAD

This was taken several weeks ago from the deck of the home of a dear high school friend.  She and her husband invited Jeff & I to stay at their lake house while attending our high school class reunion.  We had a great time dancing to the 'oldies' and I had fun getting reacquainted with classmates.  I even made a true confession to the class football hero that I had a crush on him, but I'm sure glad I ended up with my husband!!!  (Check out Scott's Sunday Sunset HERE.)

This is my soon to be daughter-in-law.  We did some magazine type high fashion images just for fun.  I've made it through all the aforementioned events with only one to go, and that's the big one, my son's wedding which is next week. 

I appreciate all your kind comments, and Chad, you make me laugh, so even though you're probably not into wedding photography, this is what I've been shooting, so it'll have to do!  And give Scott a pat on the back for me!  I miss keeping up with everyone,  and I'll be back after the wedding.

HELP, I'M ON OVERLOAD!!!

Hi Family & Friends,
Just a quick note to let you know I'm alive (barely), but swamped, so I'll have to postpone my next Tech Talk Tuesday for now.  I've been shooting another wedding, then bridal/groomals, then spent the weekend in Lake Arrowhead Calif for my high school reunion, shooting the event of course.  Now we have company, tomorrow we are supposed to go on a 3 day southern Utah trip with our 4 wheeler friends, then Saturday we leave for a family reunion week in Idaho, and I'm supposed to put together a photo presentation before we go.   When we return I have about a week before my son's wedding.  In my free time I'm coordinating the paperwork and inspections for a client's house I've got under contract.  Whew!!!!

Hope everyone is having a great summer and I'll catch up with everyone when I can!  (Scott, I have a Sunday Sunset taken from the deck of my high school friend's Arrowhead lake house to share when I can get to it.)

High Noon at Capitol Reef

Another Image Saved by Modern Technology

This spring we were on a weekend trip with some friends and tried to see too many places in too short a time.  We were at Capitol Reef National Park for only about an hour, and you guessed it,  it was around high noon on a bright sunny day and I only had my point and shoot.  Most of my photos were of our friends and taken just to document our trip, but I really loved the composition of this shot.  I love how the cliffs step back from right to left, the shape of the tree, and how it is framed within the smaller hill.  So with the help of numerous computer programs and techniques, I ended up with this.  No where close to how dramatic this scene would have been around sunset, but not too bad considering what I started with.  (I love Photoshop!) Wednesday Workday (Interesting People in Their Environment)

After photographing this sweet young girl I really 'saw' what is meant when someone is "photogenic".  When Alexis and her mother first approached me about shooting Alexis for the numerous beauty contests she enters, I had grave reservations.  In my opinion, Alexis was a nice, but average looking, slightly plump little girl, still with baby fat, and new, big, uneven front teeth that were just starting to come in.  I think she was eight or nine at the time.  I also had reservations about doing this type of photography.  I've always been against beauty contests for little girls.  But they both assured me that this was about Alexis having fun, and not about the mom's ego.  Alexis proudly showed me her room that was filled with trophies and tiaras and told me she couldn't wait for the next event.  So I reluctantly agreed.  The day came for the shoot and Alexis came with her hair done up and just a bit of powder and lipstick on, and still, I did not see what my camera was going to see.  What I discovered during the shoot, however, was that Alexis was a natural in front of the camera.  She loved every bit of it.  Her poses and facial expressions were natural, and I just recorded what she did.  I think she would have posed and let me take photos all day.  She was happy, and fun, and loving every minute of our time together.  And when my photos came back from the lab, (this was back in the film days), I couldn't believe what I saw.  The young lady in my photos was stunning!  I could hardly believe it was the same little girl.    During the next few years, I went on to take several more head shots for other contests, and I was always blown away by how beautiful she was.  Then the family moved and I lost touch, but it wouldn't surprise me if Alexis is headed for a career in modeling, or something else where she is in front of a camera.

Scott Kelby is currently the top selling author of photography books.  His books are written in a simple and concise way that we all can understand.  I have several of his books and recommend him highly.  If you are a Photoshop or Lightroom user, his books are mandatory.  He is the Photoshop guru,  but keeps up on all the latest trends and advances in photography and equipment as well as events.

This Week in Pictures - MSNBC News
This is an inspirational slideshow of amazing photos from all over the world showing weekly current events.
Joe McNally's Blog
Joe McNally is a famous photographer who has shot for National Geographic for years.  His blog is a variety of technical instruction, fabulous locations, shoots of celebrities, and whatever else is on his mind delivered with his charming humor and wit.
Stuck in Customs
Trey Ratcliff is the HDR guru and produces the Number 1 travel blog.  His photos are from all over the world.  Most are artistically and beautifully done, some are over the top.  Personal preference.  He offers several free tutorials.  Something to note is that he has reviews of many of the computer programs and plugins he uses, and even better, he has coupon codes to get a reduction in price for anything you might be interested in purchasing.
Pioneer Woman Photography
Ree Drummond hosts the wildly popular blog called The Pioneer Woman.  She is a transplanted city girl, now living on a cattle ranch/farm.  Her wit and humor are wonderful and the number of her followers is huge.  She has several sections to her blog including cooking, home schooling, etc., but this link is to her photography page.  She often has guest bloggers, and contests where followers submit their photos of a specific subject.  The photos that get submitted are truly inspiring.  But the most important part of this blog for me is that she has made available, free of charge, two different Action Sets for Photoshop you can download.  I use them all the time.
Strobist
I don't know about you, but one of the trickiest and confusing aspects of photography is lighting.  How to use artificial light, or artificial light combined with ambient light to produce an image with just the right amount of light and shadows in just the right places.  This blog is all about the light.
Pixsylated
This blog is a photography magazine with a wealth of information about all aspects of photography.  You can sign up for a free newsletter.
Digital Photography School
One of my favorites!!!  This site gives all sorts of practical tips, tutorials, information.  I've signed up for their daily email, which gives just enough valuable information to take in on a daily basis.  This one is a must.
Leggnet
For any of you thinking about the world of stock photography,  this blog is worth following.  He is local to where I live and successfully switched from full time Realtor to full time stock photographer.  In a few short years he is at the top of his trade.
Beyond Megapixels
Another photography magazine type blog with a wealth of information about all aspects of photography.
Photographybay
This is another photography magazine.  I've signed up for their daily newsletter.  It often has reviews of various cameras and all other photography equipment.
Friday Photo School 
This website hosts online live seminars about learning photography.  After the live event you can download the seminar.  Both for a modest fee.

If you are in need of some inspiration, I hope this gets you started.  Of course this list only scratches the surface of the vast amount of information available.  There is no excuse for someone who really wants to learn about photography and has access to a computer and the internet.  So much is available right at your fingertips!!  (And if you have a favorite inspiration/educational website/blog you love, please let is all know!!)
