Wednesday Workday (Interesting People in Their Environment)

Alexis
(head shot for modeling portfolio)

After photographing this sweet young girl I really 'saw' what is meant when someone is "photogenic".  When Alexis and her mother first approached me about shooting Alexis for the numerous beauty contests she enters, I had grave reservations.  In my opinion, Alexis was a nice, but average looking, slightly plump little girl, still with baby fat, and new, big, uneven front teeth that were just starting to come in.  I think she was eight or nine at the time.  I also had reservations about doing this type of photography.  I've always been against beauty contests for little girls.  But they both assured me that this was about Alexis having fun, and not about the mom's ego.  Alexis proudly showed me her room that was filled with trophies and tiaras and told me she couldn't wait for the next event.  So I reluctantly agreed.  The day came for the shoot and Alexis came with her hair done up and just a bit of powder and lipstick on, and still, I did not see what my camera was going to see.  What I discovered during the shoot, however, was that Alexis was a natural in front of the camera.  She loved every bit of it.  Her poses and facial expressions were natural, and I just recorded what she did.  I think she would have posed and let me take photos all day.  She was happy, and fun, and loving every minute of our time together.  And when my photos came back from the lab, (this was back in the film days), I couldn't believe what I saw.  The young lady in my photos was stunning!  I could hardly believe it was the same little girl.    During the next few years, I went on to take several more head shots for other contests, and I was always blown away by how beautiful she was.  Then the family moved and I lost touch, but it wouldn't surprise me if Alexis is headed for a career in modeling, or something else where she is in front of a camera.

What a beautiful girl, and of course a beautiful shot with superb lighting and everything else that goes into it. This will come as no surprise to you, but may help someone else. I always learned that the more symmetrical a face the more "photogenic" the subject is. Everyone has one eye smaller than the other to some degree or another. I notice on Alexis that in this photo you had her smaller (left) eye closer to the camera (though very slightly) that helps to make the eyes look more the same size and improves the portrait. Of course there are entire books out there on all the little secrets to make better portraits, so I won't bore you with any more right now. Let me just leave it at SUPER NICE JOB KAREN!

When I first saw this photo, I thought that this little girl looked too grown up. I am against children's beauty pageants, as well. For reasons I won't go into here. I don't believe we should win prizes for our looks, for one thing. But anyway, as long as she wasn't being pushed by a stage mom and was happy, thet's good. And she does look beautiful here, although not in the way of a child.

stunning photography AND stunning little girl. i am against makeup on children and i think she would have been prettier without it. i know i am in the majority but i am against dressing little girls up like dolls and making them look like adults. she is definitely photogenic. i don't understand why some pretty or handsome people are nice to look at but the camera does not like them, but then others it loves them.

What a great photo. Landscapes to me are easy, but I have a long way to go on portraits. It seems there is no area of photography where you are lacking.

She is extremely beautiful - I hope she is still having fun - just for her - doing what she loves to do best. You did a great job with her... as always!

Difficult for me to comment on. From a photographic perspective, this is a beautiful photo - everything about it is 'right'.

From another perspective it reminds me of the description '8 going on 18'. I understand your reluctance to make photos of her in the first place. Hopefully she also had time to do 'little girl things' and isn't a burned out model by now.

She's already an exceptional model, Karen. She's beautiful, relaxed in front of a camera and you've shown all of that in this shot.

Outstanding work.
