Winter Clouds

Winter Clouds
This image proved to me once again that regardless of any post editing one may or may not choose to do, it's really all about the light, the composition, the photographer, or a combination of all three.   Two days ago I was out running errands, and decided to take my camera and tripod with me....just in case.   After the errands I drove up to a local ski resort, looking for a photo op, but there was heavy cloud cover and everything looked dull and gray.  Sometimes there's just nothing worth shooting.  Coming home, just before sunset, the clouds began to break up so I decided I'd drive up a canyon which is about 15 minutes from where I live.  Just before the sun went down, (behind the mountain on the right), these low lying clouds were lit by the rays and put on a beautiful show that was ever changing as they quickly moved across the sky, changing formations on their way.  I especially love the little cloud on the left, lit up in front of the mountain.  On the high resolution version, this looks very 3D.  No editing program can do what nature does!

Wow, Karen, Spectacular. I find that a lot of my best shots come from when I least expect it! Pays to be prepared I guess!

This is an amazing picture, I've never seen anything quite like it. It almost looks supernatural. On the one hand, it is a picture that a lot of people post, clouds and mountains. And yet, it is something else altogether, not really in the same category at all.

You... and nature... did a fabulous job! Thanks so much for sharing this very inspiring photo. You say you went just 15 minutes from your home, but after running errands all day and searching for a disapointing photo op at the ski resort to then drive another 15 minutes to another location when you must have been tired and only wanting home well, that is dedication! And it really answered you back!
Blessing!

What a gorgeous image! I've been taking my camera everywhere because, as you say, you never know. The tripod lives in the truck and I even remember to use it.......sometimes.

I'd be inclined to say this shot would be just as stunning in black and white. My skies here in northern Calif. are completely dulled over with non-descript clouds these last few days.

Amazing photo Karen!

I just bought photoshop elements 9. Seems like a very complicated photo editing program. Are you familiar with it? I'd like to make collage banner for my blog. Thanks.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for getting back to me so soon. I am familiar with Scott Kelby. I will look into getting his book. I just received Scott's 3-volume set on Digital Photography for my birthday, which is next week. I love it! I love the writing style, so simple and easy to understand and apply. If his photoshop book is like that, it will be great!

Take care,
Judy

Bravo! For a moment I thought I saw Ansel Adams standing on top of his station wagon with his camera on a tripod--but no, it was you!

Best,

It is true sometimes the photos look best untouched. A stunning picture.

This is a wonderfully atmospheric shot - almost looks like one of those old hand-tinted ones.

WoW, that is an awesome photo. I like the one you took of you and your husband too. I'm on my way to visit your Calico photos. We lived in Pasadena for 15 years, then Oregon for 14 years and now we're in La Verne. A beautiful little town, close to the mountains.Where did you live in Pasadena? We were next to the Hunnington Hospital and the last few years on Orange Grove

I am a true lover of clouds and especially their formations. I like to find pictures in the clouds. The contrast you found is beautiful. Thanks for another great post.
