The Rest of the Story!


So the last post showed a shot of a beautiful spot outside our motel room in Taveuni, Fiji.  If one looked up,  this is what you'd see.  Yes, those are bats.....BIG bats, now look closely and you'll see lots of them hiding among the leaves.  They are fruit bats.  Ugh!!!!  Look below for another shot.

They are dirty creatures. They eat fruit and poo in flight and drop it on your house or your washing. They eat all the fruit growing in your garden, Some of them carry a fatal disease too, So don't handle them. One of the joys of living in the tropics.

Ugly, scary, dirty...maybe, but we would be in a bad way if not for the tons of insects they devour during their night time feeding flights.

I've seen fruit bats only in a zoo. Great pictures!
